ARLINGTON, Va.—CSX and The Conservation Fund today announced a program of grants aimed at improving the transportation and distribution of fresh, healthy food to communities in need. More than 23 million Americans across the country have limited or no access to fresh produce, dairy, meats and seafood. One of the contributors to these so-called “food deserts” is the lack of infrastructure to distribute fresh food to markets.

MECHANICSVILLE, Va.— At a news conference this morning, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell presided over a ceremony accepting the transfer of 285 acres of hallowed ground on the Gaines’ Mill Battlefield into Richmond National Battlefield Park.

EKLUTNA, Alaska—Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) is donating 143 acres of land adjacent to the Native Village of Eklutna to The Conservation Fund for permanent land and habitat preservation. The property is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Anchorage, in the heart of Dena’ina Athabascan country where Alaska Native people have lived for thousands of years.

ATLANTA, Ga.— U-Haul and The Conservation Fund announced today a $375,000 commitment to give back to the environment and strengthen the green economy in Atlanta. Through a three-year investment in the Fund’s Parks With Purpose program, U-Haul and its customers will support The Conservation Fund’s work to bring community members, businesses and city officials together to improve the environment, the local economy, and the quality of life for Atlantans living in some of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods.

SUMTER, S.C. —The City of Sumter, in partnership with The Conservation Fund, has completed the purchase of a 694-acre property, known as Kel-Sam Farms, located less than a mile from Shaw Air Force Base. Over the next several months, the City intends to place a conservation easement on the property that will prevent development near the military installation and preserve the land’s natural resources. In addition, the City will consider and evaluate opportunities to sustainably manage the property for timber, while offering public trails for hiking, biking and equestrian activities.
