Frances H. Kennedy

Consultant, Director of the Historic Lands Program

Frances H. Kennedy, Director of the Historic Lands Program, was from 1988 until 2006 Director of the Civil War Battlefield Campaign. The Campaign, with its partners, protected nearly 9,000 acres of “hallowed ground” on America’s Civil War battlefields.

She is the editor and principal contributor of The Civil War Battlefield Guide which includes 384 battlefields. She is the editor of The American Revolution:  A Historical Guidebook which includes 147 historic places. The Conservation Fund dedicates the books’ royalties to historic preservation.

She is the co-author with Douglas R. Porter of Dollar$ and Sense of Battlefield Preservation and the editor and principal contributor of American Indian Places, which includes 366 places of significance to American Indians.

In 2001 the National Park Service named her an Honorary Park Ranger, She is a recipient of The George Washington University’s President’s Medal for her service to the nation and, with Roger Kennedy, received the Place Keeper Award from the Foundation for Landscape Studies in New York City.

She holds a Master’s Degree in American Studies from the University of Minnesota.
