Our Role

The Conservation Fund purchased this assemblage of working timberlands through its Working Forests program, a conservation initiative dedicated to mitigating climate change, strengthening rural economies and protecting natural ecosystems by the permanent conservation of at-risk forest landscapes. Under our temporary ownership, the Stateline Forest will be sustainably managed as a working forest while critical montane longleaf pine habitat is restored, making it possible for the forest to maintain its role as a steady source of timber for local mills and jobs for timber crews.

TCF will work with public and private partners in the coming years to determine strategies and raise necessary funding to ensure the lands will remain healthy working forests for generations to come.

Why This Project Matters

Acquisition and management of this property will conserve and enhance the ecological benefits of this forest while protecting it from fragmentation and conversion. The timberland is an irreplaceable economic driver in these rural communities, providing jobs through wood products and recreation economies. The restoration of montane longleaf habitat is also important for the protection of many rare plants, bats and aquatic species.

Over the last decade, TCF has placed more than 750,000 acres under conservation management through its Working Forests program, with the goal of purchasing and permanently protecting five million acres of working forests.
