America’s Next Great Infrastructure Project Is Resilience

America is entering one of the most significant periods of investment and construction in generations.

Across the country, we are expanding energy production, modernizing the electric grid, building data centers, strengthening domestic manufacturing, upgrading transportation systems, increasing housing, and investing in water infrastructure. These investments will shape our economy for decades to come.

The opportunity before us is extraordinary. But so is the responsibility.

The question is not simply what we build. It is whether we build resilient systems that can withstand the known risks on the horizon.

Communities across the country are experiencing more severe flooding, prolonged drought, catastrophic wildfire, extreme heat, and rapidly rising insurance costs. Businesses face increasing uncertainty as to suppliers’ ability to produce, water availability, energy reliability, and critical infrastructure. These challenges are not isolated environmental concerns. They are economic risks that affect investment decisions, operating costs, and long-term competitiveness.

For much of the last century, infrastructure was understood primarily as roads, bridges, ports, dams, and power plants. Today, that definition must expand. The next generation of American infrastructure must also include the natural systems that protect communities, support economic activity, and reduce long-term costs.

Healthy forests filter drinking water for millions of Americans while reducing treatment costs for utilities. Wetlands absorb floodwaters that would otherwise damage homes and businesses. Working forests strengthen local economies while storing carbon, providing recreational opportunities, and supporting biodiversity. Coastal marshes reduce storm surge. These are not amenities. They are productive assets that deliver economic value. 

This is not an argument for choosing nature instead of development. It is an argument for building both together. 

As America invests hundreds of billions of dollars in physical infrastructure, we have an opportunity to design resilience into every project. Protecting forests around reservoirs can extend the life of water infrastructure. Conserving floodplains can reduce disaster recovery costs. Integrating natural systems into community planning can lower insurance losses while improving quality of life. Every major investment should consider how natural and built infrastructure can work together to deliver greater value over time.

The United States has historically succeeded by investing ahead of the challenges it could see on the horizon. Previous generations built the interstate highway system, expanded the electric grid, and connected the nation through railroads, aviation, and telecommunications.   

Those investments created decades of economic growth. 

Our generation faces a different challenge. We must build an economy that is not only larger, but more resilient. That requires thinking of resilience as foundational infrastructure. It includes stronger buildings and more reliable energy systems. It includes modern transportation networks and digital connectivity. It also includes forests, rivers, wetlands, farms, and working lands that provide services no engineered system can replace. 

Conservation, viewed through this lens, is not simply about protecting landscapes. It is about strengthening the systems that support American prosperity. 

The next decade will be remembered as one of the largest periods of investment in our nation’s future. If we are thoughtful about the choices we make today, we can create infrastructure that is stronger, communities that are more robust, businesses that are more competitive, and landscapes that continue to sustain both people and the economy. 

That is the opportunity before us.  

The question is whether we have the vision to build for the future we know is coming.
