The Pacific Northwest’s Columbia Gorge

Nestled between Oregon and Washington, the Columbia Gorge is a landscape like no other. The Columbia River flows as a powerful connector — of clean water, wildlife habitat, and communities — winding through ancient basalt cliffs and lush, old-growth forests, while eagles soar over misty ridgelines. It’s a place of breathtaking beauty, deep cultural history, and vital natural resources that sustain both people and wildlife.

In the Columbia Gorge, The Conservation Fund has protected thousands of acres of land and forest to safeguard clean drinking water, preserve working forestlands, and expand access to the outdoors in some of the region’s most iconic places — from the Pacific Crest Trail to beloved state parks and critical wildlife corridors that connect people and nature.

Our work balances conservation with community needs. By securing at-risk lands and supporting sustainable working forests, we’re ensuring that the Gorge remains a thriving landscape — for local economies, for essential habitats, and for everyone who depends on it.

This critical work uniquely positions The Conservation Fund to help solve some of the nation’s most pressing challenges — from protecting climate-resilient landscapes to supporting rural livelihoods and strengthening the bonds between people and place.

Preserving Working Forests

The Pacific Northwest is known for its lush, dense forests. Hand-in-hand with local partners, we are working to protect nearly 100,000 acres of forest spanning the Gorge.
