Securing At-Risk Lands

Every day, more than 6,000 acres of open space vanish across the U.S. — lost to development, fragmentation, or conversion that cannot be undone.

These are the lands that filter our water, support wildlife, sustain farms, and maintain the natural character of our communities. And once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

The Conservation Fund acts swiftly to protect at-risk lands before they’re paved over or broken up. We partner with landowners, local community leaders, and funders to secure and permanently safeguard these landscapes. Because when we lose the land, we lose everything it supports.

The Threats: Why Lands Are Disappearing

  • Rapid Sprawl: Subdivisions, roads, and commercial development eat into rural and natural areas, cutting off critical habitat and open space.
  • Fragmentation & Edge Effects: When natural lands are broken up by development, wildlife lose access to the heart of their habitat, and the new “edges” create stressful conditions that make it harder for plants and animals to thrive.
  • Loss of Working Lands: Farms and forests that once balanced conservation and livelihood are being sold, subsumed, or degraded — undermining both ecological and economic stability.
  • Climate Pressure: Drought, wildfires, invasive species, and extreme weather make already vulnerable lands more fragile and susceptible to loss.

Conservation In Action: Protecting Land Before It’s Too Late

We focus on lands that will have maximum long-term impact — places where conservation pays out for nature and people:

  • Strategic Acquisition: We acquire threatened parcels quickly, using secure funding and conservation loans, before at-risk lands are lost forever.
  • Permanent Protection: We employ conservation easements, land transfers to public or nonprofit management, or resale under protective deed restrictions.
  • Scaling for Impact: Our model recycles capital — once a land deal is completed and protected, funds are redirected to the next urgent opportunity.
