Deep Roots CPS Farm

The Conservation Fund acquired and protected 44 acres of at-risk farmland outside Charlotte, North Carolina to protect it for permanent agricultural use.

This 44-acre farm is located in Union County, North Carolina, approximately 32 miles southeast of the City of Charlotte. Union County is facing significant development pressure on the remaining intact farmland, losing an average of 3,000 acres per year.

The farmland has been transitioned to the family-run Deep Roots Community Planning Solutions (CPS) Farm to expand their 7-acre operation. The farmers have added more acreage for wholesale and retail vegetable production, launching a black garlic processing facility as well as a U-Pick strawberry enterprise, while growing their agritourism offerings.

In addition to their farm operations, Deep Roots CPS has established the Growers Network to foster a new system of support for historically underserved farmers in the region. This initiative reflects their commitment to building trust and inclusivity, especially for beginning farmers looking for support in business development and growth.

The Conservation Fund is working closely with Deep Roots CPS Farm to secure funding for an agricultural conservation easement, as well as helping the farmers secure financing to purchase the farm in the Buy-Support-Protect-Sell model of the Farms Fund program.
