Why Oak Hill Matters

For centuries, Oak Hill has reflected the story of America. Indigenous peoples sustained themselves on this land. Enslaved families built and worked it. President James Monroe, our nation’s fifth president, called it home. Within its walls in 1823, he penned the Monroe Doctrine — a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy that still guides our country two centuries later.

But Oak Hill is not just about preserving the past. Its forests, fields, and wetlands filter clean water, store carbon, and shelter wildlife. At the edge of one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, Oak Hill stands as the line where sprawling data centers and development meet the open landscapes of Virginia’s Hunt Country. Protecting it ensures that Virginia’s future includes not just growth, but balance — green space, heritage, and access to nature.

A Community-Led Future

Community defines Oak Hill’s future. It has the potential to be a place where children climb off buses to learn history where it happened, where families walk shaded trails and picnic under centuries-old oaks, and where neighbors gather to celebrate the landscapes that make Virginia unique. Earlier this year, Oak Hill went before the Virginia General Assembly for the first time, and while politics stalled legislation, the public’s voice was clear: this project matters. With broad statewide support, a petition signed by thousands, and even the Governor’s endorsement, Oak Hill has momentum.

The DeLashmutt family, who have owned and cared for Oak Hill for generations, are making this vision possible. They have agreed to sell the property for a fraction of its value and have launched a $5 million matching campaign that doubles every donation. Their extraordinary generosity means your gift today will go twice as far in helping to complete the project.

Funds raised will ensure Oak Hill is transferred to the Commonwealth as a new state park and will also create a management fund for its initial start-up and a stewardship endowment to care for it in perpetuity.

The Final Stretch

We are nearly there. Your support right now will secure Oak Hill for the Commonwealth, and — with the $5 million match — make twice the impact. Together, we can ensure Oak Hill’s future as a place where history is honored, nature is protected, and communities gather for generations to come.
