Conserving Outdoor Adventures

When We Protect Land, We Protect Recreational Access

Whether it’s a quiet paddle along a forested riverbank, a favorite trail just outside town, or a remote stretch of mountain where the cell signal disappears — access to the outdoors shapes how we connect with nature, ourselves, and each other.

But these opportunities aren’t guaranteed. Trails can be cut off. Shorelines can be sold. Open space can vanish without warning. That’s where The Conservation Fund comes in.

We protect land that keeps outdoor adventures accessible for hiking, hunting, paddling, fishing, and simply being outside. Because time spent outdoors isn’t a luxury — it’s part of how we thrive.

What’s at Stake?

  • Time outside strengthens health and well-being — Access to nature reduces stress, supports mental health, and encourages active living.
  • Connection inspires conservation — People are more likely to value and advocate for nature when they can experience it directly, building long-term support for conservation.
  • Outdoor access fuels local economies and vibrant communities — Recreation generates billions in sustainable revenue and supports tourism-based jobs in communities across the country.

Conservation in Action: Real Wins for Recreation

We protect the lands that allow people to explore, play, and connect with the outdoors. Our approach focuses on places that offer exceptional public access, safeguard scenic beauty, and support activities from hiking and paddling to hunting and fishing.

Here’s how we make it happen:

  • We protect key access points. Millions of acres of land are open to recreation but practically unreachable, blocked by private property. We identify and conserve the missing links — private lands or inholdings — that open up access to surrounding public lands and waters.
  • We protect and conserve new lands for recreation. We identify and protect at-risk private lands that offer exceptional conservation and recreational value — working with local, state, and federal partners to open them for people to explore and enjoy.
  • We work with those who know the land best. We collaborate with private landowners, communities, Tribal nations, and state and federal agencies to make sure conserved lands are stewarded in alignment with community priorities.
