Mitigation Isn’t Just a Box to Check — It’s a Business Opportunity

When your project hits a regulatory hurdle, compensatory mitigation can feel like just another box to check. But it doesn’t have to be. At The Conservation Fund, we help companies turn required mitigation into real public benefit — and strategic advantage.

Real-World Results

Whether you’re building a pipeline, expanding a transmission corridor, or developing critical infrastructure, your mitigation obligations can do more than meet compliance. They can help you build trust, tell a compelling sustainability story, and deliver meaningful outcomes for communities and ecosystems.

Dominion Provides Cultural and Historical Benefits in Virginia

To offset viewshed and cultural impacts from its Surry–Skiffes Creek–Whealton Transmission Line — located near sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places — Dominion partnered with The Conservation Fund on a mitigation strategy that delivered long-lasting public value. By funding archaeological research and restoration on Jamestown Island, Dominion helped deepen public understanding of Virginia’s first permanent settlement. The project also led to the creation of the state’s first park honoring the legacy of Native Tribes, adding 643 acres of new public land. Mitigation became a bridge between infrastructure, history, and heritage.

A Public Benefit Strategy for Williams Company

For the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline, Williams Company chose a partner-driven approach to mitigation. Over several years, we helped them invest approximately $11 million in projects that created new parks, protected game lands, and restored nature preserves. These weren’t just environmental wins — they became stories that Williams proudly shared with investors, employees, and communities in sustainability reports and newsletters. Buying credits alone wouldn’t have created that kind of visibility or impact.

Protecting Endangered Species and Enbridge’s Reputation in Missouri

Enbridge needed to meet its obligations for the Flanagan South Pipeline. Instead of a one-dimensional solution, they partnered with us to protect one of the largest bat hibernation sites in the world — home to an estimated 168,000 endangered Indiana bats. That site is now the Sodalis Nature Preserve, a place that nearly tripled recreational trails for the community and introduced new environmental education opportunities. Mitigation became legacy.

Turn Compliance Into Strategic Value

Mitigation doesn’t have to be a sunk cost. With the right partner, it can support your sustainability goals, create brand equity, and build long-term goodwill. At The Conservation Fund, we bring decades of experience aligning business needs with landscape-scale conservation.

Your next mitigation project could do more. Let’s talk.
