5 Simple Ways to Help Sea Turtles During Nesting Season

Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest along U.S. coastlines from March through October, with peak nesting typically occurring between May and August. During this critical period, beachgoers can play a vital role in protecting these threatened species by following a few simple guidelines:

  1. Lights Out at Night
Artificial lighting can disorient nesting females and hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean. Avoid using flashlights, phone lights, or camera flashes on the beach at night. If you live or stay near the beach, turn off or shield outdoor lights and close curtains to minimize light pollution.
  2. Keep the Beach Clean and Flat
Fill in holes, knock down sandcastles, and remove beach equipment like chairs and umbrellas before leaving. Obstacles can trap or deter turtles from nesting and hinder hatchlings from reaching the sea.
  3. Respect Nesting and Hatchling Turtles
If you encounter a nesting turtle or hatchlings, quietly maintain a respectful distance. Do not touch or interfere with them, as disturbances can cause females to abandon nesting attempts or disorient hatchlings.
  4. Stay Off the Dunes
Use designated walkways and avoid walking on sand dunes, which are critical nesting habitats. Foot traffic can damage nests and the vegetation that stabilizes these areas.
  5. Report Turtle Sightings
If you see a nesting turtle, hatchlings, or an injured or dead turtle, contact local wildlife authorities or sea turtle conservation organizations. Prompt reporting can aid in protection and rescue efforts

How The Conservation Fund Is Protecting Nesting Habitat

The Conservation Fund, in partnership with organizations like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of Florida, has been instrumental in protecting over 75 properties totaling 237 acres along Florida’s east coast. These efforts focus on areas like the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, which hosts a significant portion of the world’s loggerhead and green sea turtle nests. By acquiring and safeguarding these beachfront properties, The Conservation Fund helps prevent coastal development and light pollution that can disrupt nesting cycles. Learn more about this work.
