Sustainable Solutions’ services include conservation contracting, prescribed fire solutions, ecological services and natural resource education and training for private landowners, nonprofits, state and federal agencies and investor groups throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

With business growing and customer demands steadily increasing, Sustainable Solutions needed to expand to meet customer demands. The company needed working capital for new equipment and additional staff, as well as a solar array in its headquarters to make operations more energy efficient and demonstrate their commitment to low impact development.

Role of NCIF

Sustainable Solutions turned to NCIF for the financing and technical assistance that it needed to build its customer base and pursue its mission. NCIF provided a loan for working capital, a 8W solar photovoltaic (PV) array for their headquarters in a former gas station, and technical assistance with a USDA Rural Energy for America Program grant that covered 25 percent of the cost of the solar system.

Why This Project Matters

With the working capital from NCIF, Sustainable Solutions was able to create two new jobs, and expects to add another in the coming year, to help meet the growing demand for their services. In addition, the new solar array in their headquarters has allowed them to increase their energy efficiency, and they can now watch their meter run backward. Sustainable Solutions’ success and commitment to its mission is demonstrating that care and preservation of nature can be good for the economy, too.
