Shannon is committed to utilizing environmentally sound techniques to increase productivity and extend his growing season. He was the first farmer in the area to offer a year round CSA (community supported agriculture). In addition to using hoophouses, Shannon added 80 acres of farmland with a conservation easement in 2012, which allowed for greater diversity in the crops grown. Using a NCIF loan, Shannon is installing a solar-powered irrigation system with low flow water pumps that will serve both the hoophouses and fields. In addition to conserving water, his goal is to double production by 2014.
