Photo by Bill BambergerNatural Capital Investment Fund provides financing, advisory services and targeted assistance to farmers of color and minority-owned agri-businesses. Our goal? Help farmers and agri-businesses invest in infrastructure, equipment and land to:
  • Diversify beyond commodity markets
  • Develop value-added products and other sources of income
  • Serve the growing demand for fresh, local food through new markets.


Loan size: $10,000 to $750,000, Flexible terms
Interest rate: Market rate; rate depends on available collateral
Term: Working capital up to five years;
            Equipment up to 10 years
            Real Estate up to 20 years
  • Equipment (new and used)
  • Livestock
  • Cold storage, processing and value-added products
  • Renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements
  • Working capital
  • Land purchases or improvements (irrigation, fencing, etc.)


Advisory Services

NCIF partners with agencies, nonprofits and third-party service providers to address particular needs faced by farmers of color and minority-owned businesses. We can:
  • Provide gap financing for reimbursable grants
  • Evaluate renewable energy and energy efficiency prospects
  • Connect farmers with potential markets


Cold Storage Financing Program

Natural Capital Investment Fund and NC Growing Together (a project of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems) are teaming up to provide financing and support to small and mid-scale and limited resource farmers in North Carolina to acquire portable or stationary cold storage units. A low interest loan from NCIF is paired with a NC Growing Together grant that “buys down” the cost of purchasing cold storage units. Click here for more information. Download the application here

Accounting Assistance for Disadvantaged Farmers: Eastern North Carolina

Grants for up to 80 percent of the cost of working with an accountant to prepare taxes are available to farmers not currently working with an accountant. Grant funding provided by NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.  Click here to learn more.
