Nominated for a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, the city of Lithonia, just outside Atlanta, includes a historic African-American community with deep roots in the region. The Conservation Fund has helped restore one of the country’s oldest remaining Black cemeteries here as part of a broader regional initiative focused on heritage preservation, sustainable development and conservation in the Arabia Mountain area.
We led the federal designation of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area and helped establish the Arabia Mountain Natural Heritage Area Alliance. Our ongoing work with local neighborhoods and businesses includes building a new bikeway, creating nature preserves, preserving oral histories, conducting historic inventories and completing other planning projects to benefit both the people and heritage of Lithonia.
