The Kona, Hawaii, Community Development Plan provides a strategic framework for guiding future land development and conservation decisions in North and South Kona. We prepared a green infrastructure report as part of this landmark plan, which was recognized by the American Planning Association.
Our Role
To foster the goals of the community development plan, we sought to identify opportunities for enhancing green infrastructure within preferred growth areas and in Kona’s rural watershed lands, which contain an array of working ranches, public lands and other critical ecosystem resources. To accomplish this, we:
- Inventoried existing managed lands.
- Identified opportunities for ecosystem service demonstration projects.
- Mapped potential ahupua’a connection opportunities where a natural link could be maintained between the shoreline and mountain lands.
- Outlined planning guidelines to encourage sustainable land use within
classified agricultural lands where critical native vegetation currently exists.
