Steve summerfelt headshot2 205x250Steve is currently project leader for a cooperative agreement supported by the USDA Agriculture Research Service titled Improving the Sustainability of Land-Based Closed-Containment Systems for Salmonid Food Fish Production. Steve’s research focuses on water treatment unit processes and on the optimization of fish production in high intensity water recirculation and reuse systems.

With The Conservation Fund since 1992, Steve’s research has advanced understanding and practical design criteria for fluidized-sand biofilters, microscreen filtration, aeration, air-stripping, oxygenation, ozonation, ultraviolet irradiation, engineering of fish culture tanks, continuous production modeling and management and waste management technologies. Steve has transferred his research interests to applications with state and federal agency fish culture facilities and the design of large private aquaculture farms.

Steve is a Professional Engineer and holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Environmental Emphasis) from Iowa State University, a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, also from Iowa State.

He is author or co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed journal publications, nine book chapters and a book titled Recirculating Aquaculture Systems.  In August 2014, he became the fifth recipient of the Aquacultural Engineering Society Award of Excellence.
