Investing In Communities
Creating New Economies Fund
Our Creating New Economies Fund (CNEF) small grant program supports innovative triple bottom line projects, providing communities with resources to address multiple issues simultaneously. Grants average $8,000 to $12,000, with the maximum award of $15,000.
Much of CNEF’s impact comes from the way the program is designed. Applicants attend grant-writing sessions, which are provided free throughout the state. Partners receive ongoing support from Resourceful Communities staff, from the application process through the life of the grant.
We thank our supporters, including the Appalachian Regional Commission, Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, Oak Foundation, USDA Rural Community Development Initiative, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and private donors.
Since the program began in 2001, Resourceful Communities has awarded more than $2.8 million in grants, and grantees have leveraged an average of $12 for every $1 invested.

Funded projects include development of value-added facilities, green job training programs, paddle trails and more. Our combination of training, organizational support and funding strengthens community-led efforts.
