From Bucks to Acres - Creating Conservation Success

Course Description:

Have you ever found yourself unable to take advantage of a promising land conservation opportunity because you lack the necessary capital or ability to respond as rapidly as needed? This course is designed for land trust professionals interested in the basics of working with market-based financing tools. From borrowed capital and wetland mitigation banking to carbon sequestration and identification of conservation buyers, today’s high-value land conservation opportunities often require a ’layer cake’ approach to achieve success. In this class you will learn about the mix of possible financing ingredients that may be needed, hear methods and strategies for identifying and acquiring such ingredients, and explore examples of how others have successfully utilized the ‘layer cake’ approach to conservation financing .The course will highlight intersections between land protection, market financing tools and major donor cultivation. You’ll leave with strategies for accelerating the pace of conservation in your region.

Course Objectives:

After this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify several sources of potential conservation financing and describe strategies and techniques for obtaining the financing;
  • Describe the benefits of the ‘layer cake’ approach to conservation financing;
  • Define borrowed capital, explain when and where such capital is appropriate and the mechanisms for safely using borrowed capital.

This course is a Land Conservation Leadership Program offering, a partnership between the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) and The Conservation Fund (TCF).
