Middleton Place Woodlands

In late 2007, The Conservation Fund and its partners helped the Duell family protect nearly 3,750 acres of South Carolina wetlands and bottomland hardwoods that have been in the family for more than 260 years.

The Middleton Place Woodlands is located between Charleston and Summerville in the fastest growing county in the state. To protect the wetlands and working forest, the Fund worked with the Duells to create a conservation easement on the land, to be held by Ducks Unlimited. Funding came from the South Carolina Conservation Bank, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation — Lowcountry Forest Conservation Project, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and the Fund’s Revolving Fund. Technical support was provided by The Nature Conservancy and the Lowcountry Open Land Trust. Additional funding is anticipated from a North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant.

A second phase should bring the total acreage protected at Middleton Place to 5,000 acres, and total protected acreage in the Ashley River Historic District will top 12,000 acres.
