Conservation Options: The Land Protection Toolbox

Course Description:

This survey course is designed for people new to the land conservation field as well as for professionals who want a refresher course on the fundamental tools of land conservation. Expanding on the Land Trust Alliance’s Conservation Options: A Landowner’s Guide, attendees will learn to better understand how specific techniques are best applied to land protection projects.

In addition, we will help demystify title evaluations and appraisals, emphasize records management, set the stage for sound stewardship after the deal is closed, and review the applicable Land Trust Standards and Practices. An afternoon field visit to a land trust property is included.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Land protection tools: fee acquisition, conservation easements, and more
  • Basic conservation tax law
  • Title evaluations, appraisals, and surveys
  • Land protection selection criteria
  • Land trust policies, project checklists, and records management
  • Preparing for ongoing stewardship

Course Leaders:

Sylvia Bates is director of standards and research at the Land Trust Alliance. She has worked in the land conservation field since 1987, most recently as an independent consultant, and has conducted hundreds of workshops nationwide. She was formerly the director of land protection for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

Peg Kohring is The Conservation Fund’s Midwest Director, based in Michigan. A botanist by training, Peg has nearly 29 years of experience in land protection and stewardship. She has worked for the Agency for International Development, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Kinnikinnic River Land Trust (WI), The Trust for Public Land, and was the state director of The Nature Conservancy’s Minnesota Chapter.
