Model Conservation Development Criteria

The Conservation Fund and the National Town Builders Association will jointly select projects that define the highest quality conservation development through the use of traditional neighborhood development techniques, thereby creating desirable and successful new communities in which compact development patterns are joined with permanent conservation and stewardship of significant land and water resources.

What We Offer

The joint expertise of The Conservation Fund and the National Town Builders Association membership can help create exceptional communities that feature both dynamic neighborhoods and thriving natural resources. The Conservation Fund provides individualized conservation and development services that maximize conservation outcomes while integrating economic and environmental goals. The NTBA provides superior expertise in developing desirable communities.

Criteria for Selection

To be considered as models, projects must provide detailed information on the following areas, which serve as threshold criteria:

  • Conservation values associated with the property and any conservation connections that would be made possible by the project. (Note: To qualify, project proponents must advance a conservation component that is significantly greater than the minimum required by law and regulatory requirements.)
  • The potential for compact development compatible with the conservation intent
  • Scale of the project, its size and visibility
  • Potential economic value of the project
  • Financial feasibility
