The Partnership for Conservation Development: Forging a New Standard of Excellence for Conservation Development

The Conservation Fund and the National Town Builders Association are leading the effort to demonstrate a new standard of excellence for conservation development by creating desirable communities linked to outstanding conservation outcomes.

The primary goal of the partnership is to develop projects that define the highest quality of conservation development through the use of traditional neighborhood development techniques, thereby creating desirable and successful new communities in which compact development patterns are joined with permanent conservation and stewardship of significant land and water resources.

Model projects will produce the following results:

Result 1: Outstanding Conservation

  • Protecting significant natural areas, ecological or cultural resources, or working landscapes
  • Connecting residents to their community’s unique natural and cultural environment

Result 2: Permanent Stewardship

  • Providing permanent stewardship and management of conservation areas and natural resources

Result 3: Successful Development

  • Creating mixed-use, whole communities for residents and commerce
  • Enhancing communities by making neighborhoods walkable and providing public spaces
  • Using energy and water efficient design and sustainable building materials

Result 4: Natural Connections

  • Linking open space and natural areas for permanent green infrastructure
  • Preserving natural terrain, water infiltration and drainage and native vegetation
  • Restoring natural areas and minimizing the development footprint
