Sand Creek Dedicated
Site of 1864 attack protected.
In a gesture of healing, the National Park Service (NPS) this spring dedicated the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Colorado, where 160 Indians, including women, children and elderly were killed by Colorado militiamen. “Now, with the preservation of this site, Americans can learn about and reflect upon this chapter of our history," notes Christine Quinlan, project manager for The Conservation Fund.

Conserving Wisconsin’s Forests
6,000 acres added to historic Brule River State Forest.
Brule River aspensThe Brule River State Forest has just grown by nearly 6,000 acres. This addition of working forestland offers Wisconsin residents new room to roam—and to hunt, fish, canoe, and camp. The Conservation Fund tapped its Great Lakes Revolving Loan Fund--largely supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation—last year to acquire the forests from Wausau Paper.

Nonprofit affiliate grows presence beyond West Virginia.
Natural Capital Investment Fund

Rural entrepreneurs in West Virginia and across Appalachia are turning to the Natural Capital Investment Fund (NCIF), a nonprofit affiliate of The Conservation Fund, to capitalize on a new funding source and improve their productivity.
