Civil War Battlefield Conservation, MD

The Conservation Fund's Civil War Battlefield Campaign works in partnerships to protect our nation's hallowed ground, to provide comprehensive information on the 384 principal Civil War battlefields, designated by the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission, and to honor those that fought and died in the war.

The Campaign has, with its partners, protected historic sites in 73 projects in 13 states, protecting more than 8,100 acres.

Maryland Battlefield Conservation Projects

Antietam, MD

In partnership with the State of Maryland and the Save Historic Antietam Foundation, the Fund helped protect part of the historic Grove Farm where President Lincoln met with U.S. generals after the battle of Antietam.  Read more>

Harpers Ferry, MD

Thanks to a nationwide partnership that included The Gilder Foundation, Meryl and Andrew Steigman, Norcross Wildlife Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Nau, III and The Civil War Preservation Trust, the Fund protected 23 acres, which were donated to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.  Read more>

Monocacy National Battlefield, MD

In partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Civil War Preservation Trust, the Fund also protected 200 historic acres outside the National Battlefield through an easement held by the Maryland Environmental Trust.  Read more>

South Mountain, MD

Working in partnership with the state of Maryland, the Fund negotiated the purchase of conservation easements on 53 acres, where a battle leading up to Antietam took place.   Read more>
