Partners turn to The Conservation Fund to help promote compatible land use planning, which defines partnership strategies to help communities collaborate with managers of forests, parks, refuges, and other publicly owned lands. Visualization of multiple missions and networks, including green infrastructure, managed lands, military installations, military airspace and training routes, watersheds, and urban growth, is key to solving difficult land use planning problems at local, regional, and national scales.
The Federal government, the military, states, and local governments within the Southeast Region (and the country) face big, difficult challenges relating to sustainability of defense, natural, and economic resources. The members of SERPPAS recognize that business-as-usual is not working to solve these challenges. The systematic problem requires integrated planning and action by all affected to ensure mutual mission success and sustainability of viable resources for now and for future generations.
The Conservation provides an array of services to the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the military services that promote compatible land use, reduce encroachment, and achieve multiple benefits that link landscapes and missions.
The US Department of Defense is faced with an urgent need to develop compatible land use partnerships to protect working landscapes and critical natural resources while reducing encroachment threats and maintaining the military mission. Successful communication and collaboration with local communities near military installations and ranges are essential for maintaining military readiness and the economic benefits of military activities in local communities.
A key to the development of compatible land use partnerships is to visualize planning issues at a regional scale and formulate local action plans where communities can effectively communicate and collaborate with neighboring military installations. The Fund has provided mapping and planning support to SERPPAS regional projects, developed a strategic assessment of protection opportunities near Fort A.P. Hill, and convened a compatible land use workshop at Fort Stewart in partnership with the National Association of Counties.
The Fund continues to support the development of SERPPAS through GIS mapping, planning, and stategic conservation guidance. The Fort Stewart workshop is serving as the foundation for the development of a compatible land use partnership curriculum and instruction guide for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The Fund also is engaged at multiple military installations to address encroachment issues through the purchase of conservation easements.
