Herbert Ranch, CA

The 725-acre Herbert Ranch is a remnant of the 104,000-acre wetland prairie that was documented by settlers in 1885. Never disturbed by a farmer's plow, the land is characterized by vernal ponds that attract birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway. In March 2000, The Conservation Fund assisted the Herbert family and Four Creeks Land Trust in protecting the ranch for wetland restoration and education programs, as well as moderate grazing by dairy cows, which helps to maintain species diversity and sustains the local economy. Support for this project was provided by the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the California Wildlife Conservation Board and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.
