Conservation Partnership Award

The International Paper Conservation Partnership award was created to recognize an individual who achieved significant results in the protection of habitat through a cooperative relationship with a business or company.

2007 Conservation Partnership Award: John Tippett

John TippettJohn Tippett, the 2007 IP Conservation Partnership Award recipient, was recognized for his leadership by example and innovative conservation in the protection of Virginia’s Rappahannock River. Through cooperative conservation programs, education of stakeholders around key issues and the right mix of environmental protection and economic benefit, he has furthered conservation efforts on the river. He continues to implement a series of initiatives on the river which include the removal of the Embrey Dam to restore more than 100 miles of spawning habitat for native fish species, mobilization of governmental agencies and real-estate developers to make Low-Impact Development (LID) the way to do business and protect their resource, and the completion of two conservation easements on key river frontage.

Conservation Partnership Award History

Union Camp Corporation began the nation's first corporate land gift conservation program under the chairmanship of Alexander (Sox) Calder. Through its Land Legacy program, the corporation has given more than 84,000 acres of company land, valued at $25 million, to nonprofits and public agencies since 1973.

Mr. Calder worked to bridge the gap between conservation and business, becoming one of the first executives to take an active role in conservation and environmental protection. In 1987, Gene Cartledge, chairman and CEO of Union Camp, honored Mr. Calder's retirement and Union Camp's tradition by establishing the award in partnership with The Conservation Fund to encourage and recognize others who have shown that conservation and business can benefit each other.

The final award was made in 2007.
