The landscape of east Texas is quickly changing. Over the last decade, the region’s struggling forest industry has sold over 3 million acres of timberland. As this land trades hands, large forests give way to smaller, fragmented parcels—some destined for intense logging or development.
To halt this loss and protect east Texas’s natural legacy, The Conservation Fund and partners have protected more than 75,000 acres here in the past several years.
In particular, our efforts have focused on Big Thicket National Preserve. Dubbed the "biological crossroads of North America," Big Thicket attracts hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy its lush forests, cypress swamps, creeks and bayous. Together, the Fund and its partners plan to expand Big Thicket by more than 9,000 acres.
Our mission is to preserve not only the land but also the local economy. The Fund launched the Texas Pineywoods Experience to celebrate the rich history, culture and natural resources of east Texas. Working with local communities, the Fund is helping to establish the Pineywoods as a recreational and cultural destination - a getaway conveniently located within a few hours of some of Texas' biggest cities.
In 2006, the Fund set a goal to raise $35 million to protect the east Texas landscape. Just two years later, we are 80% of the way there. Your donation can help us meet our goal. Help us save a Texas legacy.
